An Italian Lunch in the Californian Sun.

Shirley MacLaine, who is 91, was spotted this weekend, on a sunny Malibu weekend at Kristy village cafe, a place that she evidently enjoys with its relaxed atmosphere and seaside appeal. She did not want to conceal herself behind the closed doors, so she went out, ordered something to eat and drink a cocktail, and enjoyed the day. No red carpet, no flashlights, and nothing but a silent lunch, a gentle breeze, and the pleasure of a woman who is simply enjoying. There was such nonchalance, such grace, about her movement, so softly she raised her glass, her whole body seemed to be a little yet significant celebration of life, at the speed only a person in a state of peace may enjoy.

Style -Even When It is Only Coffee and Lunch.

MacLaine did not simply eat; she made a statement. She was dressed in a comfortable, navy sweat-top, worn under a purple hooded sweat-top and grey-green sweat-pants, so she kept it casual. Her details were the magic, though: her big, slack, round sunglasses and her large red hat that would attract a second take even during the most exalted Hollywood celebrations. It was a reminder that the style is not limited to premieres and galas, but in some cases, it can be found in the moments of our daily life. She was carrying years of grace, insouciance, and disingenuous glamour in that hat and those sunglasses. MacLaine demonstrated that real style is not seasonal at 91.

Age Is Just a Number. Wellness is a lifestyle.

One can just think that a 91-year-old person would slow down. Yet MacLaine is going to break such a stereotype. Throughout her lengthy career, which spanned several decades, she attributes a lot of her lifetime good health to early and consistent dance training, a practice that she had entered into when she was three years old and went on much later into her adult life. That background, it is claimed, taught her strength, beat, and the need to be active. And as she sat and had her lunch in Malibu, one might have thought they caught the echo of stage lights, rehearsals, and elegant movement behind her composed countenance. In her case, longevity appears not to be as much about good fortune but rather about honor, both physical and mental, and the daily practices that make a person stay put.

Life With Quiet Joy: Redefining What It Means to Be a Star.

MacLaine’s escapade was not to get headlines. No press statement, no blitz, merely a personal encounter in front of people, which somehow spoke a lot. She is not seeking attention, and she has starred in classics and won the best awards, and made a career that has lasted more than half a century. She appears to be accepting something more unique and valuable instead: contentment. She is against the notion that stars begin to fade as they get older, and thus, in choosing to go out to lunch, sunshine, and putting on flashy clothes are her decisions to make, independent of the world that believes that once a star fades, there is no way to come back.

What It Teaches Us: Grace, Independence, and Celebration at Every Age.

At the thought of retiring at a certain age, watching Shirley MacLaine with her red hat, sunglasses, and natural smile, it becomes more apparent that old age does not warrant withdrawal. It is living with purpose, purposefulness, with fun, with fashion. Her Malibu adventure is her lesson of growing old not in silence, not in reluctance, but gracefully, with happiness. She views each meal, each ray of sunshine, each mere walk with the world as a thread in a bigger tapestry – one that has its weft in decades of art, strength, self-discovery, re-invention. And there she is stitching beautiful threads, still in that tapestry, at 91.
